Of course, a flagship car deserves the latest technology, and BMW decided to launch the E24 with a brand-new system that they called Active Check Control. This was a pioneering electronic showcase for BMW in the mid-1970s. It consisted of a panel on the dashboard, outboard of the driver, that incorporated seven green warning lights. These covered engine oil level, engine coolant level, brake fluid level, brake pad wear, windscreen washer fluid level, brake lights and tail-lights.

The lights came on as a check when a ‘Test’ button was pressed. However, the oil light did not operate when the engine was running, and the bulb warning lights only worked when the car’s lights were on. ‘It is less complicated than it sounds,’ explained the UK magazine Autocar when testing its first 6 Series in October 1976. ‘Before moving off, switch on side lamps, put a foot on the pedal and touch the button; if seven telltales come on, you know all is well.’ Even so, some early customers had trouble with it, and word began to circulate that it was little more than a gimmick. The basic idea was sound enough, though, and it was not long before other manufacturers were copying the basic principles of the system for their own cars.
